Introduction to Semen Analysis
When it comes to fertility assessments, a semen analysis is one of the key tests used to evaluate male fertility. For couples trying to conceive, understanding both partners’ reproductive health is crucial. A semen analysis provides insight into the quantity and quality of sperm, which plays a significant role in determining a man’s fertility.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through what a semen analysis is, how it’s performed, and why it’s a critical part of the fertility journey.
What is a Semen Analysis?
A semen analysis measures various parameters of sperm health, including sperm count or concentration (the number of sperm present), motility (how well the sperm move), and morphology (the shape of the sperm). Additionally, the test evaluates the volume of semen, the pH balance, and whether there are any abnormalities in the fluid.
These measurements help fertility specialists determine if there are issues with sperm that may affect the chances of natural conception or if assisted reproductive technologies like intrauterine insemination (IUI) or in vitro fertilization (IVF) may be needed.
How is a Semen Analysis Performed?
Performing a semen analysis is a straightforward process. Here’s what you can expect:
- Abstinence Before Collection: We advise patients to abstain from ejaculation for 2-5 days before the semen analysis. This ensures that the sample represents an accurate picture of their sperm health. Too short or too long a period of abstinence can affect the quality of the sample.
- Sample Collection: This is usually done by masturbation in a private room at TFI or at home (if you can deliver the sample within an hour). The sample is collected in a sterile container that we provide.
- Processing the Sample: Once the sample is collected, it is handed over to our lab. Here, our embryologists will analyze the semen under a microscope and use advanced techniques to measure different sperm parameters.
- Results: It usually takes 3-5 business days to get the results. Your fertility specialist will discuss the findings with you and what they mean for your fertility plan.
Why Do We Conduct Semen Analyses?
A semen analysis is critical because male fertility issues account for about one third of infertility cases. Many factors can affect sperm health, including lifestyle, age, and underlying health conditions. Conducting this test allows fertility specialists to:
- Identify Underlying Issues: A semen analysis can reveal problems such as low sperm count (oligospermia), poor motility (asthenospermia), or abnormal morphology (teratospermia), all of which can reduce the likelihood of natural conception.
- Guide Treatment Options: If abnormalities are found, it helps fertility specialists recommend the most suitable fertility treatments. For example, if sperm motility is low, IUI or IVF with Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) may be recommended to increase the chances of fertilization.
- Evaluate Success of Treatments: For men who have undergone treatments to improve sperm health, such as lifestyle changes, medication, or surgery, a repeat semen analysis can show whether these interventions have improved their fertility.
- Support Fertility Preservation: Men who are planning to preserve their fertility through sperm freezing, either before a medical treatment that may affect fertility (like cancer therapy) or for personal reasons, will need a semen analysis to ensure the sperm collected is of good quality.
