Fertility Treatment Timelines: How to Plan Your Year
The start of a new year often inspires us to set goals and make plans—and for many hopeful parents, building their family is at the top of that list. If fertility treatment is part of your journey, understanding how long the process can take can help you better plan your year and set realistic expectations. At Tennessee Fertility Institute (TFI), we’re here to guide you every step of the way.
First Steps: Your Initial Consultation and Testing (1-2 Months)
Your fertility journey begins with an initial consultation with one of our reproductive endocrinologists. During this first meeting, we’ll review your medical history, your family-building goals, and determine the next steps for testing. This can include:
-
Bloodwork to check hormone levels and ovarian reserve.
-
Semen analysis for male partners.
-
Ultrasounds or imaging to evaluate the uterus and ovaries.
Testing usually takes 4-6 weeks to complete, depending on the timing of your last menstrual cycle. Once the results are in, we’ll work together to create a personalized treatment plan that aligns with your family-building goals.
Ovulation Induction or IUI: A Faster Path for Some (2-4 Weeks)
For some patients, less invasive treatments like ovulation induction with timed intercourse or intrauterine insemination (IUI) may be the first step. Here’s what to expect:
-
Ovarian Stimulation: Medications help stimulate ovulation, and we monitor your cycle to identify the best time for conception.
-
IUI: A quick, in-office procedure where sperm is placed directly into the uterus to increase the chances of fertilization.
One cycle of IUI typically takes about 4 weeks, and some patients may need 2-3 cycles before moving to other treatments. A cycle of ovarian stimulation with timed intercourse typically takes about 4 weeks from the start of the period to the time of the pregnancy test.
IVF: Planning for a More Comprehensive Process (4-8 Weeks)
If in vitro fertilization (IVF) is part of your treatment plan, it’s helpful to understand the various steps involved:
-
Downregulation (2-4 Weeks): You may take medications such as birth control pills or estrogen patches to prime your body for the upcoming ovarian stimulation medications. This can help promote even follicle growth and hopefully better results!
-
Egg Retrieval (1 Day): A quick outpatient procedure to collect mature eggs.
-
Fertilization and Embryo Development (5-7 Days): Eggs are fertilized in our embryology lab, and we monitor embryo growth.
-
The Waiting Period (2 Weeks): A pregnancy test will confirm the results.
While an IVF cycle lasts 4-8 weeks, the entire process from IVF consultation to embryo transfer can take about 3-6 months. If genetic testing (PGT) or additional cycles are needed, this will extend the timeline.
Egg Freezing: Proactively Preserving Your Fertility (2-3 Months)
If you’re not ready to start a family but want to preserve your fertility, egg freezing may be a great option. The process involves ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, and freezing the eggs for future use. This can typically be completed within 2-3 months.
Managing Your Expectations and Planning Around Life
It’s important to remember that fertility treatment timelines can vary depending on individual circumstances, such as response to medications, additional testing, or unforeseen delays. Here are a few tips for planning:
-
Factor in Work and Personal Commitments: Treatments often involve regular visits for monitoring, so plan ahead for flexibility in your schedule.
-
Consider the Emotional Journey: Allow yourself time to process the experience and lean on our team for support.
-
Set Milestones: Break the year into realistic phases—from testing to treatments—so you don’t feel overwhelmed.
